Coho salmon or Silver salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch, Rus. Kizhuch)

Кижуч

Coho differs from other salmon with a mighty body with relatively big spots on its spine and sides, and short and broad tail. Its spawning dress is single-colored of reddish-brown or dark crimson without streaks or spots. During their spawning phase, the jaws and teeth of coho males become hooked.

It enters into many rivers of Kamchatka for spawning, but in rivers of western coast, especially in Bolshaya River, Coho is more in number than in other areas.

Coho can be as long as 88 cm (35") and as heavy as 6.8 kg (15 lb) with average size of 40-80 cm (16-32”) and weight of 1.2-6.8 kg (2.7-15 lb). At average take fish is 56-74 cm (22-29”) of length and 3.0-3.5 kg (6.6-7.7 lb).

Its run into rivers is rather long and lasts from late June to December. They define summer (spawning in September-October), fall (spawning in November-December) and winter (spawning in December-February) Coho in Kamchatka. Spawning grounds are located from river mouths to their upper reaches, mainly in springs, sand bars, former riverbeds, and channels with rise of underground waters with current of .3-.5 meters per second. It does not spawn in lakes.

In some lakes (Maloye Sarannoye, Kotelnoye, Khalaktyskoye) it forms a landlocked form with independent populations.
